Pushed by a pervasive defiance and a search for style, ZEN BASEBALLBAT choose not to imitate, but to embrace & modernise the influences of Ska, Northern Soul & Punk.
The band are fronted by The Gleavey Twins. A pair of literary hooligans who got themselves through the horrors of school listening to a fine tradition of wordsmiths such as Mark E Smith, Elvis Costello & John Cooper Clarke. This is all evident on their first album 'I am the champion concrete mixer' available now on Moonskaeurope records. (moon cd051)
Currently recording the follow up entitled 'For Refund Insert Baby' early indications are this new album follows on from the debut but takes the song writing to a new level.
Some of the song titles on the new album say more than a lot of bands entire songs. Titles such as:-
SOME LIKE IT COLD, GANGCALL AT THE OK CANAL & FOR REFUND INSERT BABY & THIS IS URBAN REALISM WITH LEG SPACE FOR A BIT OF FANTASY..............................
ZEN BASEBALLBAT return to the days when bands went to the toilets & never bothered to wash their hands!!! The band have successfully toured Germany three times, playing with the TOASTERS, KING PRAWN, DESMOND DEKKER and Germany’s finest - THE BUSTERS - along the way. Back in the UK ZEN have toured with THE SELECTER, THE SLACKERS, KING PRAWN and finest of all THE SKATALITES each time holding our own against these great bands.
These are no after thoughts, strung together to satisfy a market, these are songs from the soul and played with an energy live that's rarely equalled by any band - any where - any time. Taking on their biggest tour to date they will be entertaining Germany, Italy, France and the Holland over the early months of 2003, along with releasing the brand new album.
An extentive UK is planned for april & may 2003 It proves to be a busy year.
